Now that you have the basics of Xeriscaping, let's talk plants. Below are some suggested plants that will perform well in our area and are tried and true in color, dependability and water savings. This is a partial list only. If you have other suggestions, please let us know.
Agastache (hummingbird mint)
- full sun, medium water
- 24” tall, 24” wide
- blooms July through September
- attracts hummingbirds
Russian Sage (Perovskia)
- local Favorite
- full sun, low water (excess water dulls blooms)
- 4’ tall, 4’ wide
- blooms Summer
- trim to about 8” after frost or before growth in spring for best results
Butterfly Bush (Buddleia)
- size varies by species
- full sun, low water
- blooms summer; attracts swarms of butterflies
- trim to about 8" after frost or before growth in spring for best results
Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstromia)
- size varies by species
- full sun, medium water once established
- blooms in summer; colors include red, pink, purple and others
- one of the last shrubs to emerge in spring
Red Yucca (Hesperaloe Parviflora)
- local favorite
- 4' tall and 4'wide
- blooms May through fall if seed pods are plucked off periodically
- attracts hummingbirds
- full sun; very low water
Chitalpa
- grows up to 25' tall and wide
- flowers attract hummingbirds
- full sun; medium to low water
- blooms summer
Desert Willow (Chilopsis Linearis)
- 15-20' tall and wide
- attracts hummingbirds
- full sun; low water
- blooms late spring to fall
Chinese Pistache (Pistacia Chinensis)
- 40' tall, 30' wide
- full sun, low water
- beautiful orange fall foliage
- loves hot dry desert conditions; has a deep taproot, good for all soil conditions
Leucophyllum (Barometer Plant)
- 4' tall and wide
- full sun; medium water
- blooms after or before a rain
